Client Spotlight: Girard College

Girard College, located in Philadelphia, is a private boarding school for academically capable students, grades 1 through 12, from families with limited financial resources, each headed by a single parent or guardian.

 

NMCI has been supporting Girard College in developing and implementing a comprehensive diversity initiative that touches on every operations aspect of the institution through:

  • Performing a needs assessment through telephone interviews, focus groups and two surveys - one distribute to all Girard employees and a second distributed to 11th and 12th grade students.  Results of the assessment provided the foundation upon which the initiative is being developed.
  • Guidance in formation of a diversity council.  NMCI provided assistance in identifying members for the council, development of the council's charter, and development of the strategic plan for the initiative.
  • Baseline training for all Girard employees, including administrators, classroom and residential faculty, support staff and representatives from the college's Board of Managers.
  • Development of a guidebook for classroom and residential faculty at the elementary school, comprised of a variety of age-appropriate learning activities that introduce children to the concepts of compassion, tolerance and cultural competence.
